Call us old fashioned, but there is still something special about a night out at the theatre. We love theatre in Blackpool too; while other towns and cities in the UK have seen their venues struggle to stay open, ours continue to thrive and host some of the biggest and best events of the year.
The advantage of having so many venues, from Blackpool Tower to the Opera House, is that there really is something for everyone. Whether you are looking for musicals, drama, comedy or family shows in Blackpool, there is plenty to keep you entertained. And with Tiffany’s Hotel offering brilliant value seafront accommodation just a short walk from many of the top theatres, you needn’t go far to catch the latest hit show. In fact, for Blackpool theatres 2015 looks like a cracking second half to the year. Here are some of the shows and venues to look out for:
Blackpool Winter Gardens (FY1 1HT, 11 mins walk from Tiffany’s) is perhaps the central hub of theatre and live entertainment, with several venues making up an all star list. The Ballrooms here have played host to specatcles such as Strictly Come Dancing, as well as Blackpool Dance Festival, the biggest ballroom dancing competition in the world! (See the official Winter Gardens website HERE)
The Grand Theatre is one of those classic venues for so many shows, but this Autumn looks especially good fun. Among other musical highlights, the Magic of Motown (9th Aug) is an absolute must see for any fans of classic soul music. The show promises hit after hit, as the stars deliver a tour of the genre that covers everyone from the Supremes to Stevie Wonder. Click here to read more.
Otherwise, the Heritage Tours held at the Grand provide a brilliant experience for any keen fan of the stage to see the fascinating goings on behind the scenes. Book into one of these tours for an access all areas look at everything from stage secrets to the legendary performers who have appeared at the venue. Click here for tour details.
Blackpool Opera House (FY1 1HL, 12 mins walk from Tiffany’s) is another star venue that needs little introduction. This is a great place to give someone a special treat as a birthday present or unique occasion. Prowling onto the stage by popular demand will be the cast of Cats, in a lively production of the much loved musical (ticket and production details here). Or if something a little louder is more to your taste, you can also catch Tommy, the rock opera originally created by the Who. Expect classic rock tunes and a lively production (click here for ticket and show details).
The Empress Ballroom (Winter Gardens) is another glamorous venue for any fans of music and theatre, especially those who like to have a go themselves rather than just watching. This autumn, Blackpool welcomes a very special Ska and Mod Festival (Sat 19th Sept). Expect sharp suits, scooters and a whole host of your favourite tracks from this golden era of British music. Blackpool Creatives Fair (15 & 16 August): Should you fancy more retro themed fun and fashion, you might also enjoy a trip to this two day hub of crafts, arts and vintage fashion. With many quirky, crafty inependent traders present, this is a great place to find a gift for that tricky friend or family member- or simply have a good browse. Click here for further info.
