4 Reasons we love being beside the sea...

Nostalgia

Like football and the railways, the seaside holiday is a distinctly British, and largely Victorian, invention, which we then exported to the rest of the world. Many of us visited our first British beach as a child with our parents and/or grandparents. We probably all had our first taste of a sweet and sugary stick of rock, our first encounter with the weird yet wonderful Candy Floss or even freshly made donuts.

The thought of strolling along the beach as the waves roll in up to our ankles and with the sand seemingly melting between our toes takes us back to a time where we were young and care free. In times of austerity we tend to gravitate to cosy, happier reminders of times past.

Relaxation

Studies have found that being by the sea can benefit our health and wellbeing. Beaches and coastlines are central to many holidays and being in a clean, natural environment helps to promote relaxation and peace of mind.

There is something strangely hypnotic about looking out into the sea and watching how waves roll into the beach in a carefree and unpredictable fashion. There are no alarms, no meetings, no cold calls about your "so called PPI or that accident" that you were never in. Just nature at it's finest, and it's highly therapeutic.

Now, I'm no scientist but I've always thought the fresh sea air feels cleaner when compared to city areas. Well, apparently there's more to that - it's all down to the relaxing effect of the sea air. It helps us absorb more oxygen thanks to the presence of negative ions, which also balance out the level of stress hormone serotonin in our body. Meaning you should encounter a deeper, and more relaxing sleep when staying beside the sea.

Taking the weight off our feet and floating in the buoyant salt-water sea also directs blood to our abdomen and away from our limbs, making us feel more alert.

Fun & Fascination

With bills to pay and jobs to do, it’s rare grown-ups get much chance to relax, let alone rediscover their inner child. So revisiting childhood activities like building sandcastles, beachcombing for pretty shells and driftwood, wave jumping, rock-pooling or simply burying your toes in the warm sand can all renew our sense of adventure and enjoyment of life.

It’s also hard not to stare out to sea and watch the waves lapping against the shore without wondering what goes on in that big blue yonder and feeling as if our place in the world is as insignificant as a grain of sand.
