With the nights slowly drawing in and autumn approaching, the final countdown to the 2015 Blackpool Illuminations Switch On begins. Once again, we're in pole postion here are Tiffany's Hotel, where you can already feel a spark of excitement.
With the huge spectacle of Blackpool Illuminations in the present day, it's curious to think that in not-so-ancient history the town was a decidedly darker place. Prior to 1879 in fact, Blackpool streets were lit by gas light. But that year the Council devoted £5000 to experiment with electric street lighting. 136 years later of successful Illuminations later, Blackpool Illuminations is the UK's most celebrated light show and one of the most iconic sights in British culture. In 2015, the lights return brighter and bigger than ever. In case you were wondering about switch on and final dates for the Blackpool Illuminations, our start is 4th September, lasting all the way until 8th November. Plenty of time to book for one of our truly illuminating short breaks in Blackpool!
The start of the Illuminations is a particular highlight though, offering a three day festival packed full of family events and things to see and enjoy. Friday is the official switch on festival with a mystery celebrity doing the honours (previous candidates have included the likes of Peter Kaye, Keith Lemon and Robbie Williams). To make sure you get to the big switch on, we will offer a free coach trip- so no need to worry about finding parking!
So what other Blackpool Switch on events does 2015 have in store? Saturday 5th September sees an 80’s night with stars performing their chart topping hits from the era. The final night will then be a more humorous twist at the Blackpool Tower Festival Headland, with a superb comedy night. Click here for details.
So how long do the Blackpool Illuminations last? They will shine non-stop or 66 nights, while the parade stretches almost 6 miles. And if you can’t wait for the main event you can take part in the bicycle spectacular ‘Ride the Lights', when Blackpool Promenade is closed to all traffic except bikes. Held this year on the 1st September at 7pm (subject to change), it is a great excuse to ride along the prom with your family and see the illuminations before the switch on. http://www.blackpool-illuminations.net/Ride-the-Lights.html
Alternatively Illuminasia is a brand new indoor attraction. Featuring 6 vibrant zones, it combines the craft of traditional Chinese lanterns with modern lighting. This great new attraction is situated in the historic Winter Gardens. The attraction is suitable for all the family and especially great as it is open all year round and indoor.
